Each piece in the War, Redacted series began with a photographic image of U.S. military casualties enroute from Iraq and Afghanistan to Dover Air Force base in Delaware.
The original images were taken by military photographers, thus copyright does not apply. These images were painted, or ‘redacted’, with black paint. A sample of the work in this series is shown here.
All photographs of Iraq and Afghanistan war casualties in transit were suppressed by the Pentagon. The ban was lifted by President Obama in 2009. The original images used here were made available through a Freedom of Information Acts (FOIA) request by Professor Ralph Begleiter of the University of Delaware.
